Now, with the 20 January executive order, the UNFCCC suddenly finds itself without #key #resources (for paying #salaries and organizing #meetings, paying for flights, hotels etc.) in an already constrained financial situation, symbolically at the eve of the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement.

The US contribution to the UNFCCC was not correspondent to historical responsibilities in the past, and so was also under the Biden administration. At the same time, that contribution represented a key 21% of the UNFCCC "Core Budget" and perhaps there was diplomatic space to push for something more

In 2024, the United States contributed to the UNFCCC budget as follows:
- $7,253,382 to "Core Budget" (#21% of global) + arrears
- $2,740,429 to "Supplementary Activities" (4,9%)
- $ 0 to "Participation in the UNFCCC Process"

3. #UNFCCCbudget The ex. order, at para 3.c states that "The US Ambassador to the UN [..] shall immediately cease or revoke any purported #financial #commitment made by the United States under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change". But, what are we talking about?

2. The government is #NOT #withdrawing from the #UNFCCC itself. The ex. order only states that US funding for UNFCCC activities has to be cut, but that act alone cannot reverse ratification passed through the Senate in 1992. So, a US delegation can still participate in nonCMA meetings under the COP.

1. USA withdraws from PA. The process takes #1year (which means 20/01/2026). The ex. order, however, underlines that "will consider its withdrawal from the Agreement [..] to be effective immediately". This #contrasts Art28 of the PA (1year), but nobody can force the US to send a delegation in 2025.
