The Western Allies could retreat no further and declared war on Germany - but their previous concessions gave Hitler time to prepare and strengthened his position. Ironically, Munich did not bring peace, but rather hastened the outbreak of the greatest conflict in history.

This "Munich betrayal" had far-reaching consequences. Nazi Germany gained an advanced Czechoslovak arms industry, strategic territory and, above all, the confidence to make further aggressive moves. In September 1939, it invaded Poland, thus beginning World War II.
