A simple way to condense all the nuance of urbanism:

In many U.S. cities, parking spaces (for cars) are mandated or required for development.

Alternatively, affordable multi-family housing (for people), if permitted at all, is heavily debated and regularly denied in preservation of “character”.

The fact that local governments plow streets, but not sidewalks is one of the most blatant examples of how we prioritize cars over people and drivers over pedestrians.
Humbled that the family of Shirley Howard spoke with me a week after their sister was killed by a driver while pushing a stroller in the street next to an unplowed sidewalk. There is so much more to her story than local news is putting out there, and so much more we could do to save lives. 🧵

Through vouchers, Ohio gives up to $8,408/student to attend a private school, often to households with kids already attending private school without assistance.

Those are public funds going to unaccountable, often religious institutions that don’t have to adhere to the ADA.
NEW: Private letters reveal the strategy behind the decadeslong quest — successful in 12 states and counting — by politicians, church officials and activists to make taxpayer-funded school vouchers available not just to the poor but to the wealthy.
