Just wrapped up "Dopesick" by @bethmacy.bsky.social. A painful, but important read. As a journalist and someone pursuing a graduate degree in public health, it combined two of my passions. Heartbreaking how something so ugly could happen in Appalachia, one of the most beautiful places.

A few snaps from my hometown - and one of my favorite places on earth - the Daytona Beach, Florida boardwalk.

Did you know that a startling small percentage of cancer funding is dedicated to the study of metastasis - under 10% - even though it’s responsible for most cancer deaths?

Public Health is so fascinating, yet so all-encompassing.

How do you narrow down your focus and find the right fit for yourself in this field?

I parlayed information I learned this week in my Environmental Health class into a story the 6 Superfund sites in Florida that are among the 149 contaminated military bases in the U.S.

Term 1 in my Master’s in Public Health is nearly complete.

Learned so much, but man our country still has a long way to go in health equity and serving the population.

Let’s go!

I have what I think is pretty decent health insurance.

This is what I will owe following an upcoming outpatient procedure.

Our healthcare system is broken.

What if someone started a cult, but its only purpose was affordable healthcare.

If tonight people “joined” would the insurance companies offer a steep discount like it does to corporations that offer healthcare to its workforce?

Was at the Buc-ee’s today and the cashier ringing me up was talking to the cashier next to her - telling her how she takes half of her prescribed insulin per day over her other option - taking the full dose every other day.

America.

When you think of fine art, do you think of post offices?

These murals are across the US, a product of the New Deal, to get Americans back to work.

Some still exist, some were lost or destroyed and some are covered because of "complaints about its content."

Depression-era New Deal murals still hang in these Florida post offices
Over 90 years ago, artists put their stamp on Florida history after they were hired to paint murals across the U.S. during President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s plan to get Americans back to work.

I’m going to start speaking in lost language translations - how words and phrases don’t always make sense translated from one language to another.

This is from a Facebook video, using their automatic translation. Original language was Portuguese, possibly.
