Well, I’ve been well and truly corrupted by Slaanesh. I’ve converted the noise marine to be more in line with the new range. Lord Kakophonist inspired power pack amp, blastmaster grotesque cannon and flawless blade bayonet.

A chaos space marine playing an electric guitar. Underneath the guitar I have sculpted a demonic grotesque that acts as a sonic cannon. A series of tubes have been sculpted from the back of the grotesque that feed back into the guitar. The headstock of the guitar has been sculpted into a curved blade. Behind the chaos space marines head you can see a large leaf shaped amplifier with a sculpted diamond cross-hatched texture. Over each of his shoulders is an amplifier designed to look like a demonic face. The mouthes of these amplifiers are filled with the same sculpted diamond cross-hatched texture. The model is still mostly bare grey plastic, excepted for the sculpted details which are white. The photo is shot against a black backdrop and is lit with a purple under light. A small blue goblin like creature called a familiar is held against a large mutant. The two are a pair, but have been painted separately. The mutant is largely warm in tone, with dark red in the shadows, peachy flesh mid tones and pale bone highlights. The familiar is largely cooler in tone, with pale blue in the shadows, lilac midtones but the same pale bone highlights. Something needs to be done to tie both models together visually, perhaps by introducing a shared colour on their bodies. If I can push some shadows more into the purple range on both models they might have better visual cohesion.

A large muscular mutant. His head is part way through splitting in two, his fingers are fusing into claws and there are blade like protrusions and patches of chitinous armour growing on his back and elbows. The deepest recesses of the musculature are painted with a wine red, and then as the surfaces rise it becomes a peachy flesh tone, and finishes with a very small pale yellow highlight. The chitinous growth of his spine has been painted like bone, as have the blade like growths on his elbow and face. A large muscular mutant. His head is part way through splitting in two, his fingers are fusing into claws and there are blade like protrusions and patches of chitinous armour growing on his back and elbows. The deepest recesses of the musculature are painted with a wine red, and then as the surfaces rise it becomes a peachy flesh tone, and finishes with a very small pale yellow highlight. This close up from over his left shoulder shows how his shoulder blade is painted to look like it is mutating from bruised, sore looking flesh to an exposed bone colour. Druchii Violet shade paint is the hero here, really bringing the effect of necrotic bruised flesh where the chitinous bone is growing out of his spine. Not to be painted on a full stomach.

A lot of elements of the model like his ripped dungarees and sledgehammer are still white where I haven’t gotten around to painting them yet. A large muscular mutant. It shows the flesh of his right shoulder pulling up into a sort of clam shape, presumably part way through mutating into more chitinous armour.

Tip of the day: The secret to painting eyes/lenses is to cushion any table corners around you so when you pass out from holding your breath for so long it won’t do any lasting damage.

Lightest to darkest, inside to outside, that’s the key!

This picture is a close up of the lens, which shows that the orange transitions to pale yellow towards the inner corner, and has a small white specular highlight in the opposite corner to the pale yellow. Hopefully this sells the glistening amber gemstone look I was hoping to achieve. Some of the pale bone has spilled over, but that’s ok. It’s best practice to work lightest to darkest and from inside to out because it is easier to fix any mistakes.

Well now. Anyone who says you don’t need to prime your mini is an agent of Tzeentch, suffer not their lies. Experiments with acrylic inks and oil washes ending in appropriately Nurgle-ish mess. Patience is a virtue.

A miniature head has been painted with peachy skin tone colours. However, because I wanted to see if I could get away without using primer, the peachy skin tone layer has been stripped away exposing green plastic underneath. This is likely because a magenta oil wash I applied had dried too quickly, and the peachy skin tone acrylic inks had not dried fast enough, so when I attempted to remove the oil wash it simply took everything with it. All is never lost though, I will simply do it again and prime it properly.

While I had the airbrush out, I figured I’d start testing some Kriegsman schemes. Pretty excited where the first two could go, and the 3rd is shaping up… interestingly.

A soldier in a gas mask has a sabre raised in one hand and a plasma pistol readied in the other. He is airbrushed starting from a base coat of ultramarine blue, then just from above with khaki olive, then highlighted with pale green. This gives the effect of any recessed or shaded areas being tinted ultramarine blue and contrasts with the pale neutral mid-tones and highlights. I have started to paint in his trousers with thin translucent layers of brown paint to give the impression of brown material while trying to preserve as much of the pale green highlighting I did with the airbrush. I have done the same for his jacket but with cold grey blue. I don’t know how much I like this, but I will see it through. You can always just repaint these things, there are no wrong answers.

A little off the top sir? The team was masked off to spray helmets, which wouldn’t have been NEEDED if SOMEONE had left them off. Ho hum.

Tip of the day, use theraputty for masking off, it’s cheaper than branded stuff and it’s the same thing!

A yellow-green eldar striking scorpion, with newly air brushed purple-pink helmet, is half way through having some shiny beige putty peeled off of them. I wanted to show how the theraputty doesn’t leave any residue and is non adhesive and won’t affect the paint underneath it. A yellow green striking scorpion has been fully cleaned of the shiny beige putty and the model now has a cleanly airbrushed pink and purple helmet. Some shenanigans going on with their sword, but that will be base coated black so it doesn’t matter.
