In the 1500s, most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and still smelled relatively good by June. However, they were starting to smell a bit more then expected sometimes, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide their body odor.

During the Salem witch trials, the accused witches during this time weren’t actually burned at the stake. The majority were jailed, and some were hanged. But none of the 2,000 people accused ever got burned alive.

King Athelstan is widely regarded as the first king of all England, he was the grandson of Alfred the great, and the son of Edward the elder. Athelstan was a good king, he helped the poor and passed laws to make the kingdom safer, he was also known for his piety.

American colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded three British ships in Boston Harbour. They dumped 342 chests of tea into the water worth approximately 1.5 million pounds in today’s economy.

This ultimately escalated tensions between Britain and America and led to War.

The Boston tea party was a pivotal event in American history which occurred in December 1773 in protest of the British tea act, which granted the British East India Company a monopoly on tea sales in the colonies, and imposed taxes without colonial representation. PT1

The Black Death swept through Europe in 1347 and 1351 and killed an estimated 30-60% of the continent’s population.

Originating in Asia the the plague was carried to Europe through trade routes, particularly through fleas and rats aboard merchant ships. PT1

Continuing with the World War One theme, over half the men killed in World War One were killed by artillery, some estimate this figure to be closer to 75%.

Additionally, a trained crew could fire three 100 pound shells per minute at a distance of 12,500 yards. Truly brutal.

The longest battle in WW1 was the battle of Verdun, this battle lasted over 300 days between France and Germany, and in the first eight hours of fighting Germany fired over two million shells.

Ultimately ending in a French Victory, there were over 300,000 dead in the aftermath.

Watched Waterloo (1970) as I had a friend recommend it to me, it was a masterpiece and both actors portraying Napoleon and Wellington were phenomenal, and showcased both figures in a really down to earth way. They weren’t just portrayed as two legendary generals, but as two men. #Filmsky

William Cobbett was a popular journalist and politician in the early 19th century in England, and was a champion for traditional rural England against the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution.

His main goal was to raise wages, restrain foreign activity and ease poverty among farm labourers
