Note to Writer 251226-A

There’s no story without conflict. Stories are about change. People don’t want to change. That creates conflict. It’s baked in.

Jackson Tel:
Did you ever notice that 'them' spelled backwards is meth, or mix up the letters to the 'emth' degree?

Dalena Faith:
Emth is not a word.

Jackson Tel:
"Nth, sorry...I meant 'nth degree. For that, I should get the first degree. Should I not?"

Dalena Faith:
Not......funny.

The assignment is:

Create a written set of detailed instructions for tying one's shoes.

Then find an adult who has never tied a pair of shoes before. If they don't own a pair of shoes, find them a pair somewhere.

If they can't read the directions themselves, you may vocalize them to them.

Easy.

Parchment, made from hides in Pergamon around the 2nd century BC, replaced papyrus for the production of essential texts.

French scientists invented parchment baking paper in 1847 by chemically treating plant-based paper to mimic the nonstick properties of parchment, contributing to its decline.

Piney Point Lighthouse

In 1821, a lightship was stationed in the area where the Piney Point Lighthouse now stands to mark the dangerous shoals at Piney Point, 14 miles up the Potomac River from the Chesapeake Bay.

Today’s addition to The Glossary of Enigmatic Phenomena is “Surreptilian,” a portmanteau of “surreptitious” and “reptilian.”

What do hyphens (-) connect?
What do em dashes (—) separate or set apart?
Why are dashes either called em dashes or en dashes?
Why are they called dashes in the first place?

Note:

In a story scene, 'beats' are the small micro-moments of narrative action and reaction, as well as emotional shifts that move the story forward.

Like a drumbeat, they establish the rhythm, purpose, and momentum of the writing. Each beat leads to the next until the scene's mini-arc resolves.
