After John Lyttlejohns indenture of seven years as a ferryman across the Patuxent River at Hallowing Point, he was given his due allotment of fifty acres. So he patented a lovely property in the wooded hills on the west side of the river overlooking Benedict Town. He named it Pilgrim's Rest.
