Seeing the tide start to turn, at long last and years too late, against Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021-2022).
A man in an unkempt suit with an undone tie drinks from the bottle in the middle of mid-century LA traffic. The caption reads “and he wants to scream but he doesn’t.” This completes an earlier narration about the man remembering an apocalyptic dream of sirens over LA in 1943. He is Charlie Parish, a failed screenwriter and worse detective in The Fadeout, the best comic of the 21st Century, written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Sean Phillips. This final panel depicts Charlie realizing he’s found the nightmare that has haunted him since the war, a total upheaval of the value he placed on his capabilities and his soul. Rudderless and hopeless, he surrenders to his only companion, Vice, and wanders towards his soon to come death as the Studio system hides bodies and sins as easily as it credits the convenient and creates its own narrative.

A nude ghoul tells a clueless Robert, the herald of the end times, about the world that’s coming, that Robert has neither the bravery or curiosity to fully embrace, in the exceptional Providence #9 by Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows. The story is an homage to Pickman’s Model, with sadistic ghouls using the human population of Boston to record their occasional bursts of sex and violence, neither party wholly recognizing the tawdry first steps towards the apocalypse that they take part in. Isn’t Alan Moore great?

There are Halloween decorations in a brightly lit window. “And Who are you supposed to be” he asks protagonist Don Draper, a man who has spent the episode reliving his father’s casual cruelties and reckoning with the stink of reputation. This is particularly potent in Season 2’s examination of sex and adultery, particularly after Don’s abandonment of Bobbi an episode previously.
