Saturday, I found an Eastern Hognose playing dead, with a twist. Platt (1969) wrote about hognose,"The mucous membrane lining the mouth sometimes hemorrhages and the mouth becomes bloody." Autohemorrhaging is well known in herps (Horned Lizards, Gr. Antillean Boas), but less reported in hognose.

Really have been missing Louisiana recently and the time I spent at @lsumns.bsky.social as a PhD student. And the snakes. Oh man I miss the snakes.Here's a Cottonmouth from the Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (Atchafalaya Basin). I miss their attitude so much!
