The rule was supported by 92% of public comments, as well as a diverse coalition including Western lawmakers, Tribes, scientists, hunters, and businesses.

The rule, finalized in 2024 after public input and Tribal engagement, makes clear that conservation–access to nature, cultural resource protection, wildlife habitat, and climate action–is an essential use of the nearly 250 million acres of public lands overseen by the Bureau of Land Management.

Overturning plans for public lands in Alaska, Montana, and North Dakota will discard input from local communities, Indigenous Tribes, and the general public. It would also set a terrible precedent that would create immediate and lasting uncertainty for all public lands users.
