He read out the answers at the end; we'd all failed with mostly 0 correct answers. Several kids teared up. After a bit, he came clean: we'd just taken a "literacy test" given to Black voters in the Jim Crow South as a requirement for voting. You could hear a pin drop. Never forgot that lesson.
