I had a number of reasons for not staying in academia, but it was seeing colleagues go through this process again and again that really soured it for me. There must surely be a better system than this.

I don't think they've tried to be comprehensive and inclusive at all, they've just been shoddy and not checked what they're actually asking the students to do.

I don't have a problem with that (eg nut-free, that sort of thing). But the always phoning mum thing is so pervasive.
