It actually always made sense to me when they were in the doors, because when you are in life and death situations you never take off your shoes. If you have to get out quick you want to already be dressed and ready to run

TLDR: I have read wonderful books that probably had less than seven similes in their entire text.

7+ similes per chapter is overkill.
