julie k. brown @jkbjournalist As for why Biden and the Democrats didn't release the criminal case files -- Maxwell's criminal case was still OPEN during the Biden administration. She wasn't convicted until late 2021, and then she appealed her conviction. Generally, it's not a good idea to open your evidence files when a criminal case is ongoing. We also don't know whether the FBI was *still* investigating other possible suspects who helped Epstein or participated in his crimes. If you are still targeting suspects, you don't want them to know you are zeroing in on them.

Expand care access across SC As a south carolina resident and health care provider, I agree with the urgency reflected in Tom Corwin's Nov. 1 article "SC restrictions on providers could hurt its appeal for billions in rual health funding." The days of allowing antiquated health care laws to stand in the way of patient access to care are numbered. The new Rural Health Transformation program incentivizes states to unleash the full potential of health care providers by awarding points to states with optimal physician assistant practice environments or to states that have entered the PA Licensure Compact. Unfortunately, South Carolina could not check either box in its application when the cycle closed Nov. 5. That stings in a state where 41 out of 46 counties are designated health professional shortage areas and roughly 31 percent of our residents live in rural regions. We missed an opportunity to secure needed funding because we have clung to decades-old laws. We have sat idle while numerous states modernized their physician assistant practice laws and reaped the benefits of expanded access to care, empowered health care teams and now newly avail- able funds that are critically needed to reduce the impact of Medicaid cuts. The good news is that we still have a chance to fix this. S.44, pending in our Legislature, would update our physician assistant practice laws and increase our score in next year's assessment while also ensuring patients in rural communities have timely access to care. I urge our legislators to pass S.44 when they return in January. ANNETTE CRUZ Charleston

THIS WAS LEARNED FROM THOSE IN NEED SNAP BENEFITS FEEDING 42 MILLION AMERICANS MAY STOP IN NOVEMBER BECAUSE OF THE SHUTDOWN. 1. Boxed Mac & Cheese (common) = useless without milk & butter (uncommon) 2. Boxed milk is a treasure for cereal-loving kids. 3. Pasta and spaghetti sauce are everywhere. 4. Canned goods help more - IF opener include (or pop tops) 5. Cooking oil is a rare luxury but essential. 6. Spices, salt, and pepper are true gifts. 7. Tea and coffee make people feel cared for. 8. Sugar and flour are treats. 9. Fresh produce brings huge smiles. 10. Seeds are great in warmer months - growing food helps! 11. Fresh meat is rare. 12. Tuna and crackers make an easy lunch. 13. Hamburger Helper needs ground beef to matter. 14. PB & J are common - sandwich bread isn't. 15. Butter or margarine feels like gold. 16. Eggs are a prized commodity. 17. Cake mix & frosting let kids celebrate birthdays. 18. Dish soap is pricey & ALWAYS needed. 19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury - women often cry when they get them. 20. Statement from Chief Judge Virginia M. Kendall "Providing access to justice is at the heart of the Court's mission and critical for our democracy. Maintaining access to the courthouse for anyone who seeks redress remains a top priority of the court. It is a core principle to promote our rule of law," said Chief Judge Virginia Kendall. As the Chief District Court Judge in the Northern District of Illinois, I chair the Dirksen Courthouse Building Security Committee and work closely with the United States Marshals Service. During the past several weeks, I have received frequent updates on matters impacting the Court's operations to allow for proceedings to continue safely. Proceedings are and have been open to the public and the media. The United States Marshals Service has jurisdiction over the interior and exterior security at the Dirksen Courthouse. While the Federal Protective Service has authority in most federal buildings, the United States Marshals Service has that primary responsibility at the Dirksen Courthouse. I trust and rely upon the men and women of the United States Marshals Service and the Court Security Officers to provide security at the Dirksen Courthouse; this includes the perimeter of the building. At no point did I, nor did the Building Security Committee, authorize or request the National Guard's assistance to secure the Dirksen Courthouse. With my approval, additional security measures have been implemented to allow court operations to proceed, but those measures do not include the National Guard at the Dirksen Courthouse. The Courthouse remains open and accessible for all matters including hearings, jury trials, and naturalization ceremonies. The District Court Clerk's Office will be open during normal business hours, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and in-person proceedings will continue as scheduled by the assigned judge.

Because the recent attacks on Venezuelan vessels and their crews were unauthorized by U.S. law and in violation of binding international law, they were illegal summary executions - murders. It is imperative that Congress act promptly, as pending legislation proposes, to make clear to the President and the nation that the President's threat of similar attacks on Venezuelan vessels (and on Venezuela itself) are unlawful and must not be repeated. Only by doing so can Congress bring our nation into compliance with the Constitution and international law, reduce the risk of hostilities with neighboring countries and assure that similar abuses of Presidential power do not expand to American shores.
