At work we once pitched an outré graphic by our (conservative) standards. At each stage of review, we kept hearing the same thing: "I love this but [next reviewer] is going to shoot it down."

We kept responding with "Okay, let them." And then it never came. Graphic came out, people loved it.

There's also the funny element that the Soviet program was much *more* capitalistic than the US program, with multiple distinct (government) programs competing for funds and support for a much larger chunk of the Space Race than on the US side.

Closely related to this is building infrastructure to handle various forms of bad behavior (including assaults) within the university rather than working to build such infrastructure for all of society.

It recently ended, but the back catalog of Chatter might be good. It's national security, but about talking with fiction authors (e.g. spy thrillers), movie directors, historians, etc. rather than contemporary news.
