Pin the Tale will be part of this wonderful event in Sparks on 15th Nov about mapping meaningful landmarks and unofficial place names in central Bristol. Will be old maps galore and plenty of fun, interesting and creative things to do. Drop in any time 11am-5pm and bring fellow Bristolians with you!

We also wrote a collaborative poem about Stonehenge, where we each wrote two lines and then Bridget assembled the piece into its final form. You can read it below, or find it (alongside lots of other poetry/stories written about places all over the UK) on Pin the Tale here: pinthetale.co.uk

Was an absolute joy hosting a Pin the Tale poetry workshop at @pmstudiouk.bsky.social last Thursday with Bridget Hart. Participants shared poems about places all across Bristol, written using what3words addresses, and we even wrote a collective poem about Bristol’s iconic Turbo Island!

The featured stories in this one are very cool. Always so inspiring to see how people approach writing stories with what3words and the kinds of places they choose to write about!

You can have a go at writing your own place-based stories with what3words here: pinthetale.co.uk/play

Are you at the RGS-IBG conference in Birmingham this week? And do you have a story to share about a place that is meaningful to you?

Look out for our Pin the Tale stand in the Teaching and Learning Building foyer, where you can browse our online map, read other people’s stories and add your own.

Was a real joy to meet and re-connect with so many kindred spirits at #MIX2025 in Bath yesterday, themed around 'Writing with Technologies'. A particular pleasure to present about Pin the Tale in the Navigating Place through Digital Narratives session. Huge thanks to the organisers for a lovely day.

Wonderful to be part of the #BristolDigitalGameLab concept game jam yesterday, themed around 'Museum of Languages'. Our team devised a 'living languages lab' where you learn how languages have evolved historically, then make up your own new words to help make sense of imagined future scenarios!

Happy 25th Birthday Geocaching! The first ever geocache was placed on this day 25 years ago.

I celebrated by spending the day geocaching in the Quantock Hills. With my Pin the Tale badges, I now have something I can actually swap! Today I managed to acquire a tiny yellow duck.

A quite brilliant geocache I found while out walking in the countryside yesterday. Loosen the cord to lower the bag. Took me longer than I'd like to admit to spot it hanging above me, but made it an even more satisfying find!

On reflection, this day summed up exactly what I think is so powerful about location-based gaming: how it can lead people to encounter interesting, exciting and beautiful places they likely wouldn't have visited/known about otherwise.

This cache was hidden in February 2001. I wasn't even 7 years old when this was first placed! A real piece of geocaching/location-based gaming heritage. And a perfect way to end a day of adventure in this corner of South Wales.

Up on the Blorenge, after trying to process the variety of spectacular sights all around, I walked on to the cache location, a spot overlooking the iconic peaks that surround the town of Abergavenny.
April 22, 2025 at 11:56 AM
For my final cache of the day, I walked several miles further to the Blorenge. Here I had a particularly special cache in my sights: the first geocache ever placed in Wales.

After climbing 150m back up the steep ridge, I found a multi-cache that told the history of a Bristol Blenheim Bomber that crashed here in 1940. It led me across nearly 1km of moorland grasses and bogs to a solitary rocky outcrop, where I stood completely alone.
April 22, 2025 at 11:56 AM
The geocache itself felt like one of those that could last forever, perfectly tucked away in its hiding spot, only visited infrequently. In the logbook, there were logs dating back to 2009.

The stone structure that covers it is likely medieval, but nobody knows for certain. In such an isolated, tranquil location, this place has a real feeling of timeless beauty and peace.

Ffynnon Angaeron's history dates back to pre-Christian times. It was a 'pin well', where bent pins and brooches were thrown into the water as offerings for the fulfilment of wishes.
