tempering created, the drawback is that anything with shell temper can't be fired as hot (thus as hard) as grog, sand or grit tempered ceramics because fired too hot & the shell particles can slake (absorb moisture & expand), breaking the item. #ceramics #archaeology

The shell-tempered beads pre & post firing. These & previously fired shell-tempered beads won't be glazed for a few reasons.

1. They'd need to be fired to the glazing temp & the emissions from burning shell (CaO2) would bubble the glaze.

2. The shell would slake, breaking the beads. #ceramics

Per our organizers protesting OTG: the anti-ICE protestors held up ICE until the NYPD arrived, arrested demonstrators w/ almost no warning, & pushed people onto the street without provocation.

@Jessica Tisch: the NYPD is letting the Gestapo take New Yorkers hostage. Don’t help ICE - arrest them
“As the agents moved to exit their vehicles, protesters blocked them, forming a barricade at the mouth of the garage with their bodies and piling mounds of garbage bags beside them. The standoff continued for the better part of an hour as more and more protesters arrived.”

At the Civil Rights Museum today, I heard this musical rebuke to Richard Nixon written by Stevie Wonder.

I was struck by how much the words also apply to Trump.

I didn’t want to overreact, and took time to read this. Having done so, I’m adding Northwestern to the list of places I won’t visit or speak. The concessions re: international students and gender-affirming care are not merely symbolic.
Here’s the text of the Northwestern settlement with the DoJ, which includes a $75 million financial component / payoff (cc @profmarkovic.bsky.social):

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! These sewing #needles were made from animal bone some 15,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start. Form follows function! 🧵1/2

But overall, while they're quite pricey and don't have the best tread life, the fact that these are a "normal" all-season tire which can be left on all year but just so happen to be winter rated makes them an excellent choice and I am quite pleased

One other thing to mention about the Bolt I am comparing this to - I deliberately got skinnier-than-stock tires for that car. Made the wheel combo cheaper and also skinnier is usually better for snow and ice traction.

That could explain why it seems like it's got better stopping power.
