This painting always had a place of pride in my grandmother's home and it's the thing that first comes to mind when I think about my grandfather.

What about the magnolias? Well, only after his retirement, in the 1970s, could my grandfather devote himself fully to his art and it seems that he fell in love with flowers and blossoms then: rhododendron, lilies, you name it.

She became good enough to be admitted to an arts college after high school, where she got to know my father.
I was born in 1974, my paternal grandparents' first grandchild, and a girl after three boys!

My grandmother's father, sister, brother-in-law and little niece perished that night in a bunker that collapsed on them.
After the war was over, my grandfather continued painting walls (and cars) for a living.

The second of his three sons, my father, was sired on furlough in 1941. All the art he had created until 1945 was destroyed in the devastating bombing of his home town of Paderborn on March 27, 1945, in which the family's house burned down completely.

This is not a family myth – I know this from a former teacher whose mother turned out to have studied with my grandfather. Even in her very old age, she distinctly remembered him as an intensely charismatic, good-looking professor. Just look at the picture!
