Just finished an amazing trip to Paris to promote my Les Liens Qui Liberent book #nos_grands_medecins, translated from my @princetonupress.bsky.social book #doctorsbynature. My first time doing radio interviews with live interpretation: a great and fun experience. @emorybiology.bsky.social

Another summer; another wonderful undergraduate research project. Congratulations to Marlyne Gonzalez for a fascinating project and beautiful poster. Monarch caterpillars sometimes hardly have any gut microbes! Supported by the INSPIRE program at Emory University and @emorycollege.bsky.social 🧪

Great get-together with @princetonupress.bsky.social at #Evol2025 to discuss the process of writing a science book. Check out the booth in the Grand Hall to learn more. You can also enter a raffle to win a copy of my book.

Fantastic talk by Jason Chen at #Evol2025 Stochasticity can override selection in symbiont assembly. Great analogy: drift is like the wind that moves arrows from their selective target. Amazing pictures!

What an amazing opportunity to give a public lecture on my @knnvuitgeverij.bsky.social book Dokters van Nature at the beautiful Groote Museum at the Artis zoo in Amsterdam.

In our new paper #GabeDuBose used transcriptomics to show that parasites of monarch butterflies undergo very strong changes in gene expression between monarch life stages. Larvae, pupae and adults essentially act like different host species for parasites! 🧪

It’s official! The Dutch translation of my @princetonupress.bsky.social book just came out with @knnv.bsky.social Uitgeverij. I’m so excited to share all the fascinating stories of animals acting like doctors and pharmacists in my native language.🧪

First monarch of the season in my pollinator garden in Atlanta. This video nicely shows how the monarch lands on multiple plants before deciding to lay an egg on Asclepias tuberosa. They definitely are picky! #plant-insect 🧪

One of the best parts of our job is to advise undergraduate students. Last week, Sara Gotkin presented her ongoing project to figure out the effects of milkweed chemicals and trichomes on monarch resistance to parasites. 🧪#plant-insect

Such a pleasure to talk to the Odum School of Ecology and the Center for Ecology of Infectious Diseases at the University of Georgia about my new @princetonupress.bsky.social book on animals and medicine last week. Did you know? Elephants help people in both Africa and Asia discover new drugs.

What a wonderful night celebrating animals in music and medicine, with Atlanta Science Festival, @drkencarter.bsky.social @princetonupress.bsky.social @princetonupress.bsky.social. Beautiful music provided by William Ransom and Julie Coucheron.

Exciting to see this monarch butterfly on the cover of @cp-trendsecolevo.bsky.social this month. In this issue, Astrid Groot and I suggest that parasitism may contribute to the evolution of warning coloration by selecting for anti-parasitic toxins and pigments. Picture taken in St Marks Florida.🧪

It is disheartening to see science under attack. We cannot know how science will eventually result in applications. The only thing we know is that applications will come. As one example, studying cool animal behaviors can give us new mosquito repellents and drugs. @princetonupress.bsky.social 🧪

Join us at the #AtlantaScienceFestival! I will talk with @drkencarter.bsky.social about my @princetonupress.bsky.social book Doctors by Nature, while William Ransom and Julie Coucheron will play a four-hand piano rendition of the Carnival of the Animals.

Such a fun new study showing that jaguars eat grass to induce vomiting. This helps them purge parasitic worms and other things that don't sit well in their stomachs. 🧪

New paper by Mitchell Kendzel shows that long-distance migrants, such as monarch butterflies, do not necessarily need to know where to go to reach their destination. 🧪

Our study on the gut microbiome of monarch butterflies is finally out! The microbial communities change sharply between life stages, and milkweed diets also play a role.

Years ago, when I first learned about cellular respiration, I could not have foreseen that one day I would love teaching it. But I do! Such an amazing process of controlled energy release and capture. Now I get to class early to draw the mitochondrial membranes.

It’s always wonderful to attend the annual monarch butterfly festival at St Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Great combination of fieldwork and outreach. One of my favorite broader impact activities of my research funded by the US National Science Foundation.

I am so excited to share the cover of my forthcoming @PrincetonUPress book on how animals use medicine and what we can learn from them! The book will come out on 4 March 2025, and can be pre-ordered here: hubs.ly/Q02SZyF-0
