⚖️Climate litigation is entering a new era 🌏

Thanks to attribution science, courts now have the tools to link climate impacts, such as floods, wildfires and extreme heat to major polluters — and assign legal responsibility. 🧵

Today the Climate Change Committee delivered its assessment of how prepared the UK is for the impacts of climate change, and the verdict is not good.

🗣️ Our own research also shows that 40% of people in the UK think the government needs to do more to prepare us for the impacts of climate change. 🧵

Does it matter *when* we reach net zero? Spoiler: yes
Delaying the date when the UK reaches net zero will make our lives more dangerous & more expensive, writes @j-bird.bsky.social.

Furthermore, climate change is already affecting the UK, such as extreme winter rainfall in 2024 & the UK’s record-breaking 2022 heatwave.

When considering the UK’s goal to reach net zero by 2050, the science is very clear.

Furthermore, net zero can make the UK economy resilient, productive and competitive.

To ensure continued public support, fairness and choice are vital🧵

Climate action is falling terribly short
Time to bury the 1.5C goal?

Absolutely not - why the 1.5 goal must prevail
(even when global warming exceeds 1.5C)

Current pledges & policies to reduce emissions mean the world is heading towards warming levels of 2.9°C by around 2100.

With countries required to submit updated pledges by February 2025, there is no time to lose.

To achieve the Paris Agreement climate goals, total fossil fuel demand needs to fall substantially, but without a definition of what is meant by 'abatement' (use of CCS), these goals may be compromised.
