To the north, Annora could see the long carriageway curving round from the front entrance of the manor to the cobbled road that led to the royal castle — its sharp turrets spearing through mist like the teeth of beasts. To the south, past the gardens and a small stretch of woodland, were the mountains. The looming black rock surrounded most of Vlintlann, bar the stretch of land where the border with Coperlann and The Disputed laid. Runelight Burning by Izzy Grace Opening: I hated when the corpses of the Burned weren't cleared away before the crowds found them. So inconvenient. Not to mention the smell...sickly sweet with a savoury tang, like how roasted frae nuts from the forum would smell if you left them to rot in the sun. The stench of it tangled in the bone-dry air, invading my senses like an unwelcome visitor. Splayed on the cobbled side street, blood still sticky despite the Goddess-awful heat, the dead Halfr drew life. Mortali buzzed around it like the flies feeding from its scarlet halo, looking like they might lick up the gore the way they leaned over it. Sure, they tittered and gasped with disgusts, but they couldn't hide the glimmer of sick excitement in their eyes. Was it really so captivating? The latest one of us to fall? Bonus snippet: Threads of my Runelight thrashed, railing against the ugly brute above me. They began to unravel before I could stop them. The tight knot I'd coiled coming undone. Part of me knew I shouldn't do it. Not here. Not again. It would only make things worse for me. But as I tried to grasp at the power and reel it in I knew it was too late. It was like a great wave picking up speed, growing bigger as it crashed through me, drenching every inch of my being until there was too much, too much to hold, and I could do nothing to prevent it being unleashed - even if I wanted to. And I wanted. Wanted him to regret ever laying a hand on me. Wanted him to pay. Wanted him to hurt. Golden light exploded from my chest.

“Are you sure about this?” Kas asked. “I'm sure,” I replied, though my voice wavered. And he heard it. Saw it. But said nothing. Because there was nothing to be done. The first piece of the plan was already in motion, and there was no going back now. Dark blue night settled in the sky, chasing away the last peach rays of sun – a reminder of how little time we had to pull this off. I sighed and tucked myself in tighter to the wall of the litter-filled back street running parallel to Mirri’s. The tavern was closed thanks to the Caestori inspections, which was lucky for us as it meant the area was deserted. “I’m sorry, Kas,” I said. Sorry for lying. Sorry for leaving. Sorry for giving him the burden of looking out for my father. I hoped he heard it all in my voice, since I was too afraid to say it out loud. He regarded me as a breeze ran down the street. Cool air tickled my skin, gloriously soft, like silk. Worlds apart from the staleness of the cellar. Right now, I missed the closeness of it. The tinge of damp an ever-looming presence on the back of my neck. Kas’ brows pulled together, pain and confusion in his expression, and as if the decision made him physically hurt, his face crumpled and he kissed me.

You’re way too good at manipulating people already.” His emerald eyes flashed. “I take that as a compliment.” I snorted. “Of course you do.” I flattened my palm over his rune and let the steady rhythm of his heartbeat comfort me. No matter the situation, Kas never got flustered – whether he was smuggling Rūn Beer into Herus or charming Caestori to look the other way from his betting schemes. It’s why his business was thriving.

Kas was staring wide-eyed from the floor, cradling his arm to his chest. "I think you broke my wrist," he said, mostly to himself. The Àlfr sighed. "It's a minor fracture. It'll heal in a few weeks if you keep it wrapped up." Careful to keep my distance from the stranger, I shuffled in a wide arc until I was beside Kas. The Àlfr's face remained impassive as he turned his attention back to me. "The Ljósfari who sent up a beacon of light as bright as Yreya herself and then disappeared is everyone's business. Or hadn't you heard?" He leaned against a barrel and crossed one leg over the other. I wasn't fooled by his nonchalance — I could see the muscles straining beneath his tight leathers. Ready to go at a moment's notice. It was a look I'd become familiar with, a regular sight amongst the Caestori. Except this was different somehow. His stare was watchful, not cruel.

Snippet: I counted my breaths, focusing on the rush of air in and out of my nostrils. The sweet, earthy scent of Cahir's leathers. His chest wasn't moving. Was he even breathing? I looked up at him. He was watching the road, breaths so controlled it was almost graceful. Goddess, it was frustrating how good at this he was. It made needling him that much harder.
