i don't view it as a lost sale or lost income, because if it wasn't available to pirate or get for free, the person in question would simply read something else that WAS available for free.

yeah, I feel similarly. in my mind, the people that are pirating my work now - bearing in mind that i intentionally offer a lot of my work for free from the get-go - are likely people who literally do not have the means to pay for it, or otherwise would not pay for it on first viewing
