Yes, AI tools writ large can do very impressive things, but odds are still good that the specific “AI-integrated” product being sold to you is probably a scam.

Language should be used to introduce clarity, and AI as a marketing term does the exact opposite. It lumps a bunch of different technologies together and assumes that people won’t ask questions for fear of looking ignorant about the shiny new thing.

In my own work with library patrons I’ve tried reframing data management not as a system that that prevents mistakes from ever happening, but one that makes them easier to identify and fix.

In cases where consultants are hired to repackage unpopular decisions management wants to make as coming from outside experts, I think admins will still rather say “Deloitte told us to do it” than “ChatGPT told us to do it.”
