#Ebola and #Lassa viruses both cause viral hemorrhagic fevers and target the liver. Are there major differences in how each 🦠 affects host hepatocyte responses? @josephbprescott.bsky.social and our
@stanforduniversity.bsky.social
collab have tackled this question!

New preprint looking at drivers of #zoonoticdisease #spillover in wildlife trade, giving some (I think obvious) clues that actively traded wildlife species are more likely to transmit pathogens to humans+time spent in trade predicts zoonotic pathogen richness.

Hedgehogs join bats as potential non-rodent mammarenavirus reservoirs? wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/...

Rodent-born #mammarenaviruses include high-consequence human pathogens like #Lassavirus, #Juninvirus and #Lujovirus. Expanding our knowledge of virus diversity and host range is important!

In the realm of infectious diseases, few truly unknown unknowns exist. Pandemics are not sudden or magical. They happen little by little, then all at once. Worth glancing at this @plosbiology.org perspective:

New preprint offers key genomic analysis of the 2024 #Marburgvirus #outbreak in #Rwanda

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The outbreak resulted from a single #spillover event

🦇➡️👷‍♂️ The index case was linked to mining cave with Egyptian rousette bats (known reservoir of #MARV)
