Wow, @tallcuppajoe.bsky.social, spot on design for the shirt this year 🎯 totally not biased, of course 🤭 #asmmicrobe #binningsingletons

Lots to see and appreciate in the mountains and forests surrounding Lake Arrowhead. Hope everyone enjoyed their 3-day weekend as much as I did 😄🍄🦠❄️🌲

Isolated Cyanobacteria making the most of its culture tube home. What does it remind you of? 🤔

Cool macro shots of conifer lichen at Mt. Laguna in Cleveland National Forest this weekend. Using Moment macro lens on an iPhone 11. First two maybe Xanthoria parietina and Letharia vulpina, not sure about the rest 🏕️⛰️💆🏽

Found this book in the lab today and immediately dropped everything to pack up and go home… what a find 🤩

Fun afternoon ahead for football fans in the states. LFGSD 🙏🏽 a win from San Diego Wave FC and win/tie from Angel City FC gets us the NWSL shield for the first time in club history/in the second year of the club’s existence. Lineup pic stolen from X. All decision day games happening simultaneously.

I think PSG got stage fright at St. James Park 🤭

Oops forgot to post the first picture I took- Here is BC1608, a phormidium relative that likes to grow in the shape of the culture tube it’s in. This is after vortexing a month old culture.
September 22, 2023 at 10:17 PM
And lastly for contrast here is another Leptolyngbya sp, BC1602, that likes to live less clumped up and throughout the culture tube. Look at the bby oxygen bubbles being made #phycologyfriday

BC1501 is a wall hugging Leptolyngbya sp that forms a mat that floats to the surface of the media and sticks to the walls, even after the media has evaporated!
September 22, 2023 at 9:46 PM
Another favorite is this Fischerella sp. which likes to form smaller colonies and is a true branching Cyanobacteria that divides into T and Y shape branches. They are also known as nitrogen fixers in these types of environments.

BC1606, an Oscillatoria relative, is another funny colony former that likes to aggregate into a tight ball and leave loose filaments hanging on the outside. It’s also one of our prized cultures because of close matches to abundant members in the mats we study.

It's phycology Friday and I don't see enough of the coolest phlyum of bacteria around this place so here's me showing them off while I transfer 50+ cultures from Black Canyon of the Colorado River hot springs. Read more about some of them here - link.springer.com/article/10.1...

What a game! I think North Macedonia is happy with the outcome, again 😲
September 9, 2023 at 8:50 PM
How Italy never manages to beat this North Macedonia team is beyond me. 5 minutes left in this Euro qualifier, with momentum on North Macedonia’s side, and I’m hoping they pull the upset AGAIN.
