I think it’s ok to challenge the term “unAmerican” as it looks like moral exceptionalism to outsiders, the case for which looks especially flimsy in light of Trump x 2 . Would eg “unBritish”not strike you as a bit odd? Maybe just don’t use the term as it detracts from your otherwise sound analysis

I love everything you do Renee, am full of admiration for the energy and courage with which you fight mis/disinfo, vile grifter-hacks like Taibbi and so on… but this term “unAmerican”. What does it mean exactly and is it still viable given America has now voted for Trump twice?

I bet his spoken French is worse than the average European politician’s English, and they wouldn’t have even studied English at uni. Also just because he studied classics, he’s not “fluent in Latin and Ancient Greek.” Is that even possible? Not that it matters though as you say :)

Exactly re language. Have thought about it a lot. US/UK politicians have this big advantage and I think it feeds superiority complexes. Imagine if Johnson had had to speak French during Brexit negotiations, or Trump having to face 20 hostile Ukrainians in Ukrainian

Yeah so many I know who were apoplectic throughout trump 1 are either unmoved or have in some cases consciously retreated, embracing “stoicism” or whatever philosophy appears to justify the retreat
