Sportswriter. Next book: American Coach, The Triumph and Tragedy of Notre Dame Legend Frank Leahy. Out 9/16/25
I spoke about my book American Coach to the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Houston tonight and had the honor to chat with Ed Prudhomme, a freshman on the Irish scout team in 1953, Frank Leahy’s last season. What a treat for me! Ed told me he served as holder for the scout team kicker — Paul Hornung.

Thank you, John Hoover, for this review of American Coach, my new biography of former @notredame.bsky.social head football coach Frank Leahy, on si.com.

Ivan Maisel’s new exploration of Notre Dame icon Frank Leahy might remind Sooner Nation a little of Barry Switzer.

And here’s my favorite photo. From left to right, me, Frank Leahy’s grandsons Ryan and John and great-grandson Teddy. Big thanks to the Leahy family for their support of American Coach.

Incredible read by Ivan Maisel on former Notre Dame coach Frank Leahy, who was as brash as he was successful. Leahy's 4 AP national titles trail only Nick Saban & Bear Bryant. A fascinating look at a remarkable coach who was ahead of his time

Here’s an excerpt @espn.com just posted from the opening chapter of my book American Coach: The Triumph and Tragedy of Notre Dame Legend Frank Leahy, being released next week by Grand Central Publishing. It’s my first ESPN byline in almost five years.

In 1999 I picked an All-Century college football team for Sports Illustrated and included WR Howard Twilley of Tulsa (1963-65), one of the first great passing teams of the modern era. Of the 85 players I picked, he was the only one to write a thank-you note. RIP to a classy guy.

The season-ending columns by Chuck Culpepper in @washingtonpost.com and @williamfleitch.bsky.social in @nymag.com are excellent, decidedly different in tone, and pretty much cover the waterfront about the state of college football. Read both and see where you come down.

Our son Max would be 31 today. He died 10 years ago by suicide. We miss him and wonder who he would be today. He expressed himself best with his camera in his hand. Have a milkshake today in his honor.

I like Mike Locksley and I think he’s a talented coach. But the @newyorkjets.bsky.social interviewing a college head coach with a 35-67 career record is the Jetsiest Jets move the Jets have ever Jetted.

A lot of journalistic soul-searching here. Should be mandatory reading for journalism classes.

The field judge called both the PI and the face mask on Skattebo’s long catch, which meant the official had two flags. Didn’t know they carried two flags. Feel like I should have known that.

Thank you for letting me know. That’s exactly why I wrote the book and it’s gratifying to know that the message of I Keep Trying to Catch His Eye continues to be heard. Now, buy a copy for everyone you’ve ever met. 🙂
I just finished this book. You did an amazing job telling not only Max’s story but yours as well. Thank you for being willing to be vulnerable and transparent for the benefit of others #griefislove
