Lord Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics, was seen as a favourite heading into the election, endorsed by athletics greats including Usain Bolt and Mo Farah. He ran on a platform of democratising the IOC. Clearly, the IOC wasn’t into the whole democracy thing.

The last time an IOC president was elected in one round was Samaranch in 1980. His son was up for election this time (good old IOC nepotism). Samaranch senior was a literal KGB agent.
