I write about food, restaurants and travel because life’s too short.
There are cheese toasties and there are these: Cornish Gouda Toastie with pickled carrots. £10

I did say “HOW-DAH” to the lady at the till and she looked at me like I flashed her or something.

It belted down with rain at Longleat tonight and there were moments my patience was tested, but it’s incredible what the folks here achieve with these enormous structures.

Sherry spotted in the wine shop At the Chapel. @sevillatapas.bsky.social, do you know this one? Any good? I do like a PX.

The damage for lunch, At the Chapel, Bruton. One never comes to Bruton for value, but some dishes did feel like better value than others.
The arancini and crumble would be recorded, and the Fiano—but the rest I would leave.
Service is slow for a not busy restaurant, but charming.

The other best dish of the day. Spiced apple & winter fruit crumble, Caledonian ice cream, £9. A hearty portion made by someone who clearly loves dessert.
Warm spices, sweet, tart and a biscuit-like crumble that adds crunch and substance. Easily shared by two. #foodsky

Roasted Jerusalem artichokes with whipped tahini yoghurt and pickled carrots.
The concept is more interesting than the dish, which was flat. The punch of the carrot never comes and the earthy tahini is lost among the Jerusalem artichokes. A better version awaits.

Saltfish croquettes in a tomato sauce reminiscent of bouillabaisse. A nice idea in croquettes with a fish cake-like texture. I would have LOVED it if the sauce leaned into that bouillabaisse depth a bit more, but a nice dish.

Roast beetroot, balsamic, mint, Greek yoghurt. Tasty, would be better with a trickle of a balsamic sauce to compete a bit more with the yoghurt.

Dish of the day—mushroom arancini fried and served hot with a black garlic puree and a grating of cheese that I could not identify. Bloody good dish.

Somerset burrata, brown butter pears, toasted pumpkin seeds, sage, £12

Milky, sweet and nutty but wants something to bring it together—maybe some of that brown butter from the pears.

Wandered into At the Chapel in Bruton, England because it seems many places are closed on a Monday save for this countryside stalwart that also doubles as a bakery in the front. Modern British European food on the menu with apple crumbles, arancini and salt fish croquettes. #foodsky

While we are out of the country, our dogs goes to the local boarding place, which he adores. I swear he prefers it there. (He’s the one on the right).

Less than 24 hours into this trip and it’s pork sausage roll o’clock. I wish it was warm, but I’ll take it. Down like a meaty lozenge.

Just landed at London Heathrow and you can tell that I have lived in the Middle East for a long time because I barely peeled out of arrivals, turned into the Marks only to be confronted with this!

Tomorrow I’m posting an Uninvited Opinion write-up about Lolla in Singapore.

“Lolla’s easy-going spirit and capable, crowd-pleasing dishes just delighted me. It is a neighbourhood restaurant for which I had to travel almost 4000 miles.”

Check in tomorrow!
