Christian, Techie, Autism-haver, Londoner, in that order.

Also a Reddit & Discord mod for the /r/Hermitcraft and /r/ThirdLifeSMP subreddits.

Just need to make sure that the axe won't break when bulk crafting, somehow, while still allowing it to do so in a crafter.

We still haven't taken the rainbow flag down from June yet on the discord server icon (initially unintentional, but now we've just left it up until we have a reason to change it because why not) - even now we still get people coming out of the woodwork to complain every couple of months.

Usually. I can imagine things were quite difficult this time last year. No idea what things were like behind the scenes, but on the subreddit (& associated discord) it had been a while since any major fandom drama, too, and it kept us busy for many months.

I work in IT. The people with an issue on their PC who "don't want to bother you" and struggle through assuming "that's just how it is" frustrate me as much as the people who complain to us about every little thing.

"Don't struggle in silence" has become a go-to phrase for me recently.

There's a hidden setting to get the iOS camera app to make JPEGs instead of HEICs, but it doesn't convert your existing files.
October 12, 2025 at 8:22 PM
It's an image format based on a (patented) video format. It's confusing, but it's now natively supported on Apple devices (the main places you'll find them taken on, most other devices still use JPEG to take photos) and modern Windows ones.

Ooh, automatic enforcement (presumably on the US age estimation?).

Yeah, that's doomed to fail.

I'm aware of past incidents where LGBT videos were getting restricted incorrectly (potentially due to dodgy training), but we use Moderate restricted mode at the school where I work, and only once or twice a year do we get asked to manually let a video through that's needed for a lesson.
September 8, 2025 at 4:14 PM
Has there been a noticeable change in what's been getting allowed to either Moderate or Strict mode at all?

I would assume Joe is referring to a specific incident, not the general feature that has been around for years to stop schools from blocking YouTube outright.

What makes the current restricted mode any different from the previous one? Anything that was previously named "Machine Learning" is now being tagged "AI" because of the marketing hype.

Good food for thought.

I've had similar thoughts for Reddit, too, given their own similar behaviour, especially since their IPO.

Maybe there needs to be an MCYT-focused Lemmy or Mastodon server for different communities to congregate?

Is there a schedule / list of hermits attending yet?

Oh yeah, the infrastructure needs expanding, but we don't need to be thinking about replacing all petrol stations with fast charging stations. Motorway service stations are probably a better fit.
March 26, 2025 at 4:04 PM
I'm not quite sure I follow. With CCS and NACS, the same charging port on the car supports AC charging at home and DC Fast Charging. You don't need 2 separate cars.
March 26, 2025 at 3:04 PM
Fast charging is only really needed for road trips, most people should be able to survive commuting with just charging at home or work.
March 26, 2025 at 2:29 PM
But with EVs that's not necessary - just have a (slow) charger in every home or workplace, can be charged while at work (that's 8 hours there for someone working full-time) or while you sleep (another 7-8 hours of you have a good sleep schedule).

Tom Scott edits that are super obvious like this are quite fun for me.

What does the test tube emoji mean? I haven't been able to work that out from context.

But when they're adding LCD screens and Wi-Fi chips, they could stand out from the other "smart" tech and say they were the very best (like no-one ever was) with confidence, with only a slightly higher BOM (when the prices are already high enough due to the cheap timer chip being swapped for a CPU)

(And even then I still use the Old Reddit UI for moderation, as it fits more posts on my screen at one time)
