I know, I know, rando YouTuber commenting on the entertainment industry; but I was so disappointed in the movie because my first thought afterward was, "The story isn't completely working and THAT's the thing Pixar is known for. What happened?" So I did some digging and found this.

The aunt was originally his mom until America Ferrara left over the changes they made to the lead character. That’s why, even though they set up that Elio is that most Disney of protagonists (an orphan) neither he nor his aunt seems to exhibit any grief. It was never in the story.

It certainly did. And the changes that were instituted to it did not help it in the least. Those of us who know who Elio is, KNOW who Elio is.
