Sure but we know most players don't do that. Bumping difficulty is the last resort because maybe devs had a point with this challenge or you are approaching it wrong. On the other hand you might undermine something that was supposed to be climactic by destroying it if it's on a lower difficulty

Also I'm fairly sure most of the reason Rogue-lite exists is not because of what you just said.

But because overly relying on RNG every run doesn't feel great.

With Rogue-lite systems at least you can have some assurances with your unlocks rather than praying for good spawns.

And that pain you feel when you make the wrong choice is also important for the themes of the game.

Even when in reality as I said, realistically you barely just usually lose something you'll make back getting to your body, it still gives that hurt because we are loss averse humans.
November 29, 2025 at 7:13 PM
That is a choice with weight at that moment. If I move forward I risk losing this.

But if that risk doesn't exist. That choice is a no brainer. Just keep moving forward never stopping. And DS is a dark world of struggle. Having to constantly consider retreat is important for the themes of the game.

It adds layers of decision making.

If death has no weight at all then I can basically just take all the dumbest risks without any worry at all.

But lets say I beat a mini boss in the middle of the level.

Do I continue exploring and risk losing the extra souls or do I find a way to cash out?
November 29, 2025 at 7:07 PM
By design, unless you REALLY fuck up, each time you lose souls you are consistently only losing just a little chunk that you made just from walking around in this space between bonfires.

Not major quantities for no reason.
November 29, 2025 at 7:03 PM
If you keep the resources when you die you revive and spend your souls...

where is your bank then? So no...

You are also grossly overstating how "inflated" this difficulty is. Even if you play terribly you lose like 10 levels at most. wow you might've survived half an extra hit
November 29, 2025 at 7:01 PM
Exploration is about that experience in every game. Or do people don't consider a game to have exploration unless it has a page full of checkmarks for seeing stuff?

Having unused souls is not progress either.

And someone would have to be extremely bad to never spend souls for HOURS.
November 29, 2025 at 6:59 PM
It's not meaningless. Suddenly you have a bank account which you can cash out if you beat the boss. The reward of beating it effectively grows and grows with every attempt.

Plus it does matter when it comes to choosing other paths, when it comes to perfecting the run to the boss and so on.
November 29, 2025 at 6:54 PM
And many people as players probably don't choose the difficutly they would've enjoyed the most because... well they couldn't know. So almost everyone except some lucky few end up with a worse experience.

If hard game is marketed as hard, then hard game players will flock to it and have a good time.
November 29, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Because easy modes in a way are also a combat balance designer throwing up their hands and saying "do it yourself". Which sounds ok in the face of it. But in practice you just don't have all the information a combat balance designer has. The vision of how the game should be played gets muddy.
November 29, 2025 at 6:51 PM
That much is true but at least you got a solid experience up to that point.

Many games with difficulty options require YOU to become the combat balance designer without knowing all the facts. At least with a unified design you can decide if it's for you or not rather than ruin your own experience.
November 29, 2025 at 6:48 PM
It also encourages proper resource management because you can either explore extensively and risk running out of Estus flasks and healing. Or recharge your resources and make the exploration difficult again.
November 29, 2025 at 6:45 PM
They are not supposed to help with exploration. They are supposed to keep the dangerous world dangerous after your first pass through plus allows you to harvest them for resources if you find yourself stuck or similar
November 29, 2025 at 6:44 PM
But if you are doing a hard encounter and learning mechanics then you are going to the exact same place where you left your body no?
November 29, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Unless you were explicitly farming. Every single soul you got on your body is a result of your exploration and the time you spent exploring is time well spent unless you somehow forgot everything form your previous life.
November 29, 2025 at 6:38 PM
Because the body ends up working as an unexpected bank system You went into the boss 10 times and every time you ran back to the room you collected x ammount of souls which you cash out when you succeed. Also, souls aquisition is in parallel to level progress. Meaning losing souls is not losing time
November 29, 2025 at 6:37 PM
This assumes any blanket loss of a resource, even if not limited is a waste of your time.

The drop of your body adds tension to the next run through the area and encourages you to at the very least try to do as good as you did before. And if you do you get a big payout
November 29, 2025 at 6:35 PM
That said it is at times like this that I think about how high the percentage of people that have the "clear the game" achievement is. What truly weirds me out though is that Ranni's ending is the highest even when it's a bit out the way compared to tje standard one
November 29, 2025 at 3:13 PM
They could.

I don't like to see games as attention black holes however.

Because for many that may be the right choice. There is nothing wrong with that.

For many others it's what keeps them coming back.
November 29, 2025 at 3:11 PM
What an unc thing to say
November 29, 2025 at 7:10 AM
And both the devs and community felt like they didn't know what to make of Zenos. Because for the most part he is kinda there.

The final scene is certainly great and I love him as a character. But it's tying a loose end. It doesn't compare to the rest of Ultima Thule
November 24, 2025 at 2:34 AM
I am confused because if anything Zoraal Ja gets overshadowed by Sphene.

He is portrayed as the main threat for 90% of the expansion and then Sphene swoops in and she is an antagonist with complex motives and Zoraal Ja is just a lizard with daddy issues
November 24, 2025 at 2:32 AM
No... Not really...

I legit don't know who you mean for Meteion.

Hermes? He is fine but the end sequence is the highlight of the expansion and he ain't in it.

And Calyx has future implications but appears late and Sphene has THREE characters by that point
