What do you think he meant, then? My interpretation seems like the only possible plain English reading of the sentence. If the theoretical question being posted to the candidates is neither important or difficult to answer, then why is how they would answer it "the question"?

If someone were to say "We're all stuck in this cave. The question is: how to do we get out?", no one would ever interpret that to mean that to mean that how to get out is unimportant. This structure inherently implies that The Question is the central thing that you must consider.

He's saying the two questions about this are how they talk about it and how they answer that question. If how they answer that question isn't important and it's not difficult to answer, then why is it one of the "questions"?

Of course they will. They've had their storyline about Trump being friends with Epstein and they're selling fewer ads from that now. They'll just pivot to "actually Trump didn't do anything" because that will get new hate clicks and feelings-validation clicks
