well technically this happened yesterday, but I got to soft-release the newly metamorphosed moth that I kept safe indoors and looked after for the past few months!! :D Here he/she is below (I think it's a male based on the shape+size and coloration spread of the abdomen?):
A side-picture of a giant leopard moth holding on to a stick from beneath. The moth is mostly colored a very light cream off-white, like half-and-half. From this viewpoint, only the left side of the moth is visible, but one can clearly see many small and medium sized spots on it that look very similar to leopard spots! The spots are all over its body, except for the top of its head and its white, fuzz-flocked thorax. The peripheral spots are mostly fully-black, with some in the middle of the wing area being rings of black with a light beige-tan color. Actually on closer look, that's an optical illusion and the inner spots are the same color as the main cream-white body 😅. The little leg joints also all have tiny black spots on them! :) There are a few old, curled up, but still deep green rhododendron leaves in its makeshift plastic tank, and another thicker stick is seen in the foreground laying on its side. One can also see a few threads and strands of leftover silk on the stick from when the caterpillar started to spin its candy-floss reminiscent metamorphosis nest/cocoon (not pictured) 2nd photo of aforementioned leopard moth, just from a slightly different angle and showing more of the back and upper head of the moth. This picture of it really shows off the 3D structure of it's "wing veins"; the wings almost look like how leaves with veins do, and one can see how the wing material slightly dips and folds between each "vein". It's reminiscent of a finely woven light fabric. The shape of the moth from this angle almost looks like a dorito chip! An isosceles triangle, very soft around each "edge", with a very small white lump/spherical nub of a head on the highest most acute point. another photo of the leopard moth, except this time from more of a frontal angle that shows off its relatively plump elongated oval-shaped abdomen! the thorax area is just the lovely cream-white color with a light short flocking of fuzz or fluff, and the lower abdomen has a few tiny pinpricks of black spots, most of them arranged in neat vertical rows, with every dot being almost exactly the same distance from the next dot, both vertically and horizontally! From this angle, its wings cloak the sides and back of it like a stiff, long hooded cloak. From under a wing, a small glimpse of a bright rusty orange can be seen on the side and back of the abdomen--a leftover coloration from when it was a caterpillar (a very fuzzy, long-haired prickly wooly bear!), and one could see hidden stripes of the same orange between the majority of the deep, nearly entirely black rich chocolate-brown coloration. I really like these creatures :)
