do you ever just zoom in to a random unknown neighborhood on google maps and check out the random/strange home businesses that pop up. its the most fun you can have with maps on the floor

learning about local politics and the relative ease of getting involved in/impacting them really helped me get out of my hopelessness slump. it may not be a way to deal with all of the global events going on, but hey, at least you can make life for you and your friends/community better.
