Ray Crawford hit two goals for Town at Portman Road to beat Aston Villa and secure the Division One Championship title, way before the inception of the Premier League.
Ironically, it was on April 28 in 1999 that Sir Alf passed away, aged 79.

A last-minute Jon Walters goal grabbed a 2-2 draw at champions elect Newcastle United. A crowd of 52,181 also witnessed a fine Connor Wickham (pic) goal for Town before the trophy was handed to the jubilant Geordies.

A Portman Road record crowd of 30,649 mobbed the Town players on the final whistle as a late Jimmy Leadbetter goal forced a 2-2 draw against Arsenal and kept the Blues in the hunt for the First Division title. Three days later, The Gunners were crushed 3-0 at Highbury

England beat Eire 2-1 at Wembley as Terry Butcher got the better of future Town manager Mick McCarthy. Butcher set up Trevor Steven's opening goal with a fine ball and later saw Gary Lineker later scored his first Three Lions goal.

South African born Colin Viljoen marked his Town debut in style with a home hat-trick as Portsmouth were beaten 4-2. Outrageously skilful but injury-plagued, Viljoen scored 54 goals in 372 appearances and won 2 England caps from Don Revie in 1975.

Town stalwarts Craig Forrest and Frank Yallop featured for Canada in 1-0 win in San Jose against Costa Rica. The pair went on to win 108 international caps between them and a combined 697 appearances for The Blues whilst at Portman Road.

Scottish left winger Jimmy Leadbetter, affectionally nicknamed "Sticks" due to his spindly frame, was the hero at Old Trafford at Town beat Sir Matt Busby's men 1-0. The left-winger's 35th minute ensured a first ever victory over The Red Devils

Teenager Dean Bowditch scored a hat-trick live on Sky TV as the Tractor Boys thumped Watford 4-1 at Portman Road in front of 23,524 fans. Jermaine Wright scored the fourth goal when he slammed home as time expired.

Bill McGarry's men comfortably beat Norwich City 2-0 at Portman Road thanks to goals from Ray Crawford and Billy Baxter. Baxter won the old Division 2 title in 1960–61, the Division 1 title in 1961–62 and the Division 2 Championship in 1967–68.

Fifty years today, Town pipped Newcastle Utd 5-4 in a Portman Road humdinger. Town, who went on to finish 3rd and reach the FA Cup semi-final that season, saw Bryan Hamilton (pic) score a hat-trick alongside Allan Hunter and Dave Johnson goals.

A significant date as The Blues won their first ever trophy when Ipswich School were beaten 2-1 at Portman Road in the Suffolk Challenge Cup Final. A crowd of 1,000 saw Sherrington and Pocock score the goals in snowy conditions.

Chris Makin, signed from Sunderland for £1.25m, made his Town debut in a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa. Makin enjoyed a solid spell at Portman Road and finished with 92 total appearances pver three years before joining Leicester City.

Roger Charles Osborne, the Blues FA Cup winning goalscorer in 1978, was born in Otley. During eight seasons he showed his versatility by usually being asked to mark the opposition's most dangerous player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010.
