oh good! maybe blocking out the shadows into simple shapes over your refs and then transferring those over to your drawing will make it it a little easier

Also references are your best friend when it comes learning how lighting works!!

Yeah lighting is super hard to learn!! Sketchbooks blending sucks imo so I use ibis paint x! a tip that helps me is following the form of your subject with your brush strokes. Don't be afraid to ad some pops of saturated colors to, it makes it nice and cohesive :D

Also adding a transparent layer with the color of your bg as an over lay will help marry your colors together more!!

What software are you using?? Depending on it youll have to make a blending layer or just set a round brush on blending mode, just blend the edges so it doesn't get muddy. I also like adding a more saturated orangish red color on the edges of the shadows to make them pop more (subsurface scattering)
