Irish dairy and beef sectors have the tools to tackle methane emissions
Methane is an immensely challenging problem for the Irish dairy and beef sectors, but science is providing the means – mainly through new feed additives and breeding techniques – to reduce associated emissions. When ruminant animals like cattle and sheep digest food, they produce methane, a greenhouse gas 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. This fact is an existential threat to the dairy and cattle industries, but research breakthroughs suggest they can each pivot to a sustainable future.

Blood moon to be visible in Irish skies early on Friday morning
Early risers on Friday will be treated to the spectacle of the moon turning blood red as it drops towards the horizon. The celestial display is due to a total lunar eclipse, an astronomical event that last occurred back in November 2022. It will be visible in Irish skies from 5.10am and peak in intensity at about 6.20am. The Earth orbits the sun, and the moon orbits the Earth.

Been a great story to work on! Thanks to the Pulitzer Center for funding this work and to Maria Delaney for helping to bring the story to life!
Once described as “a gigantic marine aquarium”, Lough Hyne in Co Cork is facing a barrage of stressors.

Reporter @oliveheffernan.bsky.social investigated this over the past year. She found multiple pressures and lack of management are wreaking havoc on life in the lough.

Read our findings:
Europe’s oldest marine reserve, located in County Cork, is in decline. What’s going on?

Fossil fuel ties: how staff in Europe are putting heat on universities.

Despite little top-down pressure on universities over divestment, some experts are hopeful of change.
