the famous photo of mohammed aldurrah hiding behind his father jamal moments before he [mohammed] was shot and killed by the israeli occupation forces [workingclasshistory on instagram] On this day, 30 September 2000, Muhammad al-Durrah, a 12-year-old Palestinian boy, was killed by Israeli troops in Gaza. While being sheltered by his father, Jamal, Muhammad was gunned down in a barrage of bullets fired by Israeli soldiers, while being filmed by France 2 cameraman, Talal Abu Rahma. The frames of him hiding behind his father and then lifeless became some of the most well known images of the second Palestinian uprising (intifada) against the decades-old Israeli occupation. The Israeli military initially accepted responsibility for the killing, but later changed course and denied it, claiming that either he was killed by Palestinians or he never died. One pro-Israel activist even claimed France 2 staged the incident, until the activist was convicted of defamation and fined. In the 2023 invasion of Gaza, Israel killed several more members of the al-Durrah family. Jamal stated: "Israel targeted the homes of my brothers, killing my two brothers, my brother's wife, and his only daughter. Dozens of my neighbours have also been killed, mostly children... Israel does not target military objectives. Famine sounds like misfortune. Genocide sounds like guilt. Famine lets them send aid without admitting harm. Grieve publicly without naming the perpetrators. Appear human without being held accountable. Genocide demands the truth. It forces us to name the violence. It forces us to name who made it possible. Gaza's Genocide Disguised as Self-Defense Let's be clear: Israel didn't bomb Iran to "protect itself"-it did so to distract the world from Gaza. Crimes the International Court of Justice calls "plausibly genocidal" continue unabated while the world looks away. And yet, the dominant narrative still casts Iran as the aggressor-even as Israel: • Continues bombing Gaza and striking inside Iran • Raids cities and refugee camps in the West Bank • Launches attacks in southern Lebanon and Syria Yet somehow, it's Iran that is accused of destabilizing the region. Lies Don't Stay Hidden Forever This isn't just a war of weapons, it's a war of narratives. And right now, the narrative is being hijacked. Every explosion over Tel Aviv steals attention from Gaza. Every pundit fixated on Iran is a headline not about Palestinians who are being starved and bombed and erased in Gaza. The link between Gaza and the Iran escalation isn't incidental, it's strategic. Netanyahu's surprise strike wasn't about defense. It was about distraction. And in that distraction, a genocide continues. If Iraq taught us anything, it's that lies don't stay hidden forever. But the longer they live, the more they kill. So the next time you scroll past missile trails and mushroom clouds, remember: in Gaza, entire families are being starved, shelled, and erased. They are not numbers. They are names, voices, dreams. If we allow Gaza to disappear from our conscience, we will not find peace-only more grief, spreading in ever-widening circles.

i think this is a good example of why i’m buying japanese versions of games i already own: either much smaller boxes, or much better art
the japanese version of battle line in a box that is almost half the size of the english version, next to it is a version of piece o’cake in a more rectangular and thicker box with really gorgeous art (i did not buy either of these games)

about 40 games or so bought from game market 2025 spring (a board game expo in tokyo). i didn’t catalog the games yet so it would be difficult to list them all for now

for this one, tabriz, i’ve never played the game. however i really hate when orientalist games butcher important arts of the cultures they’re presenting (in this case calligraphy)
original box art for tabriz. the logo contains the name in latin characters with a line on top to emulate sanskrit. above it is the name in arabic characters in a kufi typeface, kinda resembling the font andalus (the arabic equivalent of papyrus) the text is overly stylized with a pattern, a gradient, a bevel, and two outlines in both languages the same cover but with the logo replaced to one i made. the arabic typeface was changed to nastaliq, which is used for indo-iranian languages but not arabic. the latin is in an italicized handwritten typeface with stroke widths customized to match the arabic one the arabic text now overlays the latin, with the dot for the ب acting as the dot for the i. the latin text has a purple gradient with a subtler outline and bevel, while the arabic only has a pinkish gradient
