This is about you and me and the octopus selling ice cream.
Most sporting events are now sponsored by the terrible combo of online loan companies and sports betting sites. A lotta families about to get their wealth and/or futures hovered up. Watching this World Series and there are nonstop invitations to get into the action.

The live interpreting that ARod & Papi did for Yordan postgame (interview) was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in sports broadcasting. Honoring the player’s (and fans’) language AND doing it on the fly, not effortlessly but naturally. THIS is the payoff for having representation. Nicely done.

I got to meet Tom Owen casually/briefly this evening — a historian and public servant I’ve admired since I moved to Louisville almost 25 years ago. I got to express my admiration and mentioned how I used to love seeing him getting on my bus, after fixing his ever-present bike to the rack in front.

The Cuban immigrant population of Louisville has grown from 6,000 to more than 30,000 in just the past 14 years. I’ve heard about the influx since becoming a teacher (and working with my school’s amazing ESL teacher) but these numbers reported in the NYT are jawdropping.

If you can, check out Past Lives, the latest film from A24 by director Celine Song. It’s showing at the Speed Cinema only through tomorrow. It’s so subtle and beautiful and it plays silences like a virtuoso.

Tori Amos is a genius. So much originality with new arrangements of music and lyrics from a wide range of her amazing catalogue. Nothing wrong with jukebox shows, but this was something else.
