Compared to improv over I IV V - improvising basic motives and melodies just over a root pedal felt way more inviting and yielded more satisfying results, yet didn't feel like the thing I'm looking for.

Felt more like the way it would be done for film scoring? Fourths and Fifths are strong here!

I'm also still quite rusty on the keys, so I'm basically only oom-pah'ing & arp'ing all of the LH in quite simple chord voicings when improvising, also to remain simple and basic, which is my goal.

Day 2 Update:

So, I got a few basic ideas down yesterday.
I'm gonna continue playing & writing.

Coming up with melodies that satisfy me over a simple C, F, G chord progression is not easy. Skill issue or did humanity just do everything there is under this most basic of progressions?

My point is, it's just a basic idea. One word or a basic sentence.
Originality comes from the context and how it's used.

Who says what YOU gonna do with it? It might take a completely different turn in so many ways. The list is endless - if it all stems from simple ideas.

I'm not sure how many, if any other composing musicians have similar thoughts when trying to write like this?

"Naaah, I'm not going with this idea.. I'm ripping off XYZ or heard this before"

With copyright being such a big topic in modern music & sampling... I wld not be surprised tbh..

Reason is that it would probably hinder me in using this idea "my way" or in using it at all, because it would burn into my brain *this idea / piece has been used already* and thus is not original.

However... this is assumption is FALSE and maybe blocking creativity extremely.

I'm pretty sure if I'm gonna do some research I'll find a classical piece, that uses at least one, if not all of the basic ideas I came up with. Pretty sure one of these is similar to one of Shostakovich's Waltzes.... BUT!

I am not gonna research & listen! I am not gonna do this.
Why? Read along!

So, while coming up with first new ideas and melodies for this project, using these forms I noticed a lot of the basic melodic ideas I like to settle with remind me of already existing music.

Most of these are in waltzy 3/4 and still *very* basic, but I can't name the music it reminds me of.

c) aleatoric or probabilistic sequencing
d) combinations of above

Most of my music originates in the above, and my satisfaction with the results vary greatly, which is why I want to try this for real this time, even if it felt previously frustrating.

Gonna use this post to share some new exp & thoughts that happen, laid out as replies - to hopefully not spam anyone's timeline.

It's ofc not the first time I use these techniques, but by default most of my ideas come from either
a) noodling on an instrument
b) just using my knowledge of harmony

Desired timing on these is kinda obvious, but there is world of expression and continuity of interest in how these are performed out. It's also great for practicing dynamics!

Kinda want to try and practice this on the accordion, but it's midnight.

there are like three botb covers for decadent decade in the works

also I have to say it again and again, I love paulstretch! used it on one of the acoustic covers I did last year
am thinking about building a song on top of that stretched render in renoise - could be fun!

& so much more to do!!!

never heard anyone say "das ist aber ein beleibter kollege" in my life, but this is funny

since stem splitters are integrated into so many daws now and I have enough old projects where I wished I had 'em, this is gonna be a good start

only used them for remixing or transcription purposes as of now, but I'd like to get more creative with it in that project
