what i guess im asking is like, is a novice reader imagining a ~good reader~ who understands what this passage means (within the storys context) immediately? or is it that this style of starting without context is disorienting and might exacerbate existing comprehension problems?

i get that, it makes sense to bounce off if youre feeling completely lost. but what i struggle to get is like, you‘re not expected to know what those things mean, its starting in medias res and the meanings are revealed slowly.

what is it that makes this unwelcoming? genuine question.
