Eddie cuts himself off as Buck digs into his pocket and hands him a bag of pulparindos. "Thanks, man," he says with a smile just for Buck. "No worries," says Buck easily. "I see how it is," says Hen archly, and Buck refuses to let himself blush. "I'm sorry that your best friend didn't prioritize your favorite snacks," says Buck, refusing to make eye contact. "Oh, so am I," agrees Hen. "If I were Buck's best friend I'd have Skor bars right now," she says, elbowing Chimney. "And instead you will have to survive with me providing you with the one of the world's greatest movies," says Chimney, steadfast, "Okay, is everyone ready? We're not delaying again. Time for you to all learn how to do film noir right." "I have no issue with Lauren Bacall, I'm just saying that being a femme fatale is literally like half my job," Buck complains, and immediately a piece of candy bounces off his cheek. Beside him, Eddie barely stifles a snigger, before offering him the open bag of pulparindos.

We can make you a new one, after tonight." "Or," says Maddie after a moment, "You can look after it for me." Buck looks at her, startled. "I'm someone," he says, slowly. "You shouldn't let me touch it either." "Evan," says Maddie, gentle as she can be mussed and bruised and covered in blood. "I trust you. I know that you wouldn't use it against me."

"What the fuck was that?" asks Chimney. "How did you not get trampled?" "O, ye of little faith," says Buck, grinning as he offers a hand to Chim and pulls him up to standing. He wipes the blood off on his jeans without thinking and then winces. "I also thought you were going to get trampled," says Eddie, dismounting, blinking a little in the sunlight. "How on earth do you know how to do that?" "Don't say it was just a dream," interjects Chimney, "I've definitely been trampled by a horse in more than one dream." "What can I say," shrugs Buck, "It's just a little trick riding." "Just a little trick riding, he says," complains Chimney in a 'can you believe this guy' kind of tone. "All American action hero, huh?" says Eddie wryly, looking Buck up and down, his eyes catching on the shining golden sheriff badge. "C'mon Diaz, we all know that's you," laughs Buck, "I just worked as a ranch hand in Montana for a while, that's all." He tips Eddie's own cowboy hat at him, and carefully ignores the look it earns him. "Come on, time to take out the infamous Black Fox Bandit." "Right," says Chim, "You guys keep him distracted, I'll sneak in the back way and start going through the loot, see what secrets I can find." He gives them a dorky little salute, before heading off around towards the escape route they built into the abandoned quarry. "Okay, partner," says Eddie, "Let's get this show on the road..."

“C’mon, Eddie,” he says, batting his eyes, voice just loud enough to be overheard, “It’s a Friday night, let’s live a little! I want to go dancing, and you know Miss Mabel sings tonight.” Eddie makes a show of being unsure, while Buck pouts and scowls. “Alright, alright,” he says in the end, throwing his hands up. “You win, doll, you win.” Eddie’s doing this terribly broad mobster voice, and he’s using his hands way too much, but their mark is obsessed with the archetypes from old gangster films, so it’s definitely going to work for him. Embarrassingly, it’s kind of working for Buck too. Maybe it’s because Eddie naturally looks so Hollywood handsome that he can pull off being the trope from an old school movie. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you don’t even want to dance with me,” declares Buck loudly, before flouncing over to a pile of crates. He knocks loud and unconcerned, and smiles brightly as Chimney slides back an almost unnoticeable hatch and peers out at him.

“Then let’s get going,” says Eddie, as behind them, Chimney starts to swing the door shut again. His arm is still heavy over Buck’s shoulders as they walk down the stairs, smoke and music rising to meet them. “I think you're enjoying being taller for once a little too much,” says Buck, and Eddie just laughs, puts more weight down on Buck’s shoulders. “You’re not that much taller than me usually,” says Eddie, rolling his eyes. They reach the bottom of the stairs, and over the sounds of Karen belting some old blues song, they can just make out Chimney behind them, asking for the password. “Go time,” says Eddie, “I’ll get two rye and perch at the bar, keep an eye out for our guy.” “If anyone asks, I’m dancing,” says Buck with a sharp nod, dissolving into a musclebound bootlegger in a shirt with rolled up sleeves and suspenders. Eddie pauses, looking at him with just the hint of a frown. “Have you made him taller?” he asks, like he even saw this forgery for longer than four minutes. “No,” lies Buck, “Maybe you’re shrinking.” He darts ahead to avoid Eddie’s half-hearted swipe at him, grinning as he disappears into the haze of laughter and music.

plane got delayed last night so I spent a lot of time writing fic in the airport so hey! #wipwednesday have some inception au #buddie
Chris crashes pretty early given what a busy day it was, but he does insist on a bedtime story from Buck as well as his usual one from Eddie. As Buck sits on the couch, listening to the faint strains of Eddie's storytelling, he checks his hands again. Still not actually too good to be true. Wild. After a while, the storytelling stops, and Buck hears the sound of a door closing gently, then some rustling in the kitchen. "Hey," says Eddie softly, walking in and sitting next to Buck on the couch, handing Buck a beer bottle in the same movement. "Thanks," says Buck, then he stops, looks at Eddie with earnest wide eyes. "Eddie, seriously," he says, solemn now, the tears he's been holding back all day prickling at his eyes. "Thank you." Eddie looks at him, just as serious, just as sincere, a fond smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Hey, you don't need to thank me," he says, and then quickly, before Buck can start to argue properly and make his case. "Buck, you saved me, you know that right? Finding a way to get Chris back with me, helping me figure out each step of the way, even putting me in contact with your friend Carla? You saved me. You're right, you know, no one's subconscious should be gunning to beat themselves to death. l've been racking my brain trying to think of a way to thank you, even just a little. You really don't have to thank me." "I was happy to help," says Buck, overwhelmed. "Yeah," agreed Eddie, "So was I."a It's not enough, not nearly, but it's clear that Eddie won't let him keep on at this, so instead he holds out his beer to clink. Buck will have to keep thinking of ways to thank Eddie.

Buck starts prepping the PASSIV, tucked in his little alcove in the podium of a statue. “You see it all the time. These academics are always willing to push the boundaries to get their work published, to get the recognition they feel like they deserve, and it always ends the same way: that precious reputation in tatters. Their entire legacy lost.” “She’s laying it on a bit thick, isn’t she?” mutters Eddie behind him, and Buck throws him a grin. “Could be worse,” offers Buck, “Could be Chim.” “Hey!” Chimney complains quietly as he joins them in his waiter’s outfit, a tray of flutes balanced in one hand. “You’re right, but hey.”

Buck opens his eyes, waking with the alarm he'd set. Sitting at a chair pulled out from the dining table sits Eddie, watching him. "Watching people sleep is creepy, haven't you heard?" asks Buck, slipping the needle out of his arm, unscrewing it. It's his personal PASSIV, but he still tries to be careful. "How's it going?" Eddie asks, ignoring him entirely. Buck narrows his eyes. "It's a start," he says, guarded. "Okay," says Eddie, "Good." It seems earnest enough to have Buck relaxing just a little. "It won't take long," says Buck, "A few more days, I think, and I should be good to go." "I know," says Eddie with a rueful smile. "You're a faster learner, I saw that the other day."
