Heard Island and McDonald Islands are remote volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, 4,100 km southwest of Australia. Discovered in 1853–1854, they were used by sealers in the 19th century. Now uninhabited, they are a UNESCO World Heritage site known for pristine ecosystems.

The Kerguelen Islands, discovered by French navigator Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec on Feb 12, 1772. The archipelago, often called the “Desolation Islands,” has no population and is primarily used for scientific research, with France establishing a permanent base, Port-aux-Français, in 1950.

Ouvéa, part of New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands, is known for its stunning lagoon and rich cultural history. Historically, it has been home to the Kanak people. Ouvéa is also a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its remarkable biodiversity and pristine marine environment   .

Socotra, an island in the Arabian Sea, is home to unique biodiversity, with 37% of its plant species found nowhere else on Earth. Its iconic Dragon’s Blood Tree produces red sap, used historically as dye and medicine, giving the island its otherworldly appearance.
