The next verse (27:76) starts at the end of the bottom line, and begins with the words “inna hadha” [إِنَّ هَـٰذَا]

The calligrapher nearly runs out of space after writing “inna”, but finds a creative way to add the next word without making the line too long: write vertically!

The verse so nice, God said it twice. ❤️ Written here in Maghrebi script in a 13th-century Qur'an manuscript.

I adjusted this make these lines stand out on their own. Here is the before version:

This is from the book Garden of the Sages (Bustān al-‘Ārifīn) - a collection of knowledge that al-Samarqandī considered essential.

Known as Imam al-huda (the Imam of Guidance), al-Samarqandī was a respected jurist, ascetic, mufti, hadith scholar, and commentator on the Qur’an.

This is from the early literary anthology ‘Uyun al-akhbar, by Ibn Qutayba (d. 889).

The saying also appears in other books. A shortened version, for example, is quoted by al-Ghazali (d. 1111) in his book Revival of the Religious Sciences.

And here, with a bit of luck, I turned it into a meditation on the letter 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘧 - the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, famous among mystics as a symbol for the oneness of God, and the singularity of the divine mystery:

An artist's touch can transform the mundane into something profoundly beautiful.

The text at center is not a wise saying or religious teaching. It simply says:

"The letter 𝘚𝘢𝘥 (ص) with an 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘧 (ا)."

An invocation of the Divine, from the opening page of a Persian manuscript copied in 19th-century Kashmir.

"In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Merciful."
