@neilbedi.bsky.social, @rileymellen.bsky.social, Robin Stein, @sanjanamv.bsky.social, @muyixiao.bsky.social, @evanhill.bsky.social and others again! Everything on VI is a mammoth team effort so I couldn't have done any of this work without these and other colleagues.

The industry is small and life is long so I hope I get to work with the inimitable @ajcardia.bsky.social, @aric.bsky.social, @trbrtc.bsky.social, @ckoettl.bsky.social, Courtney Brooks, @devonlum.bsky.social, @dimakhavin.bsky.social, Haley Willis, Natalie Reneau,

I’m taking the rest of the year off and then moving to London in the new year to figure it out!

The burgeoning world of AI today gives journalists the ability to investigate stories we couldn’t before, even as it renders our already-stretched-to-breaking information ecosystem more fragile. I want to continue to think deeply about both of these things in my next chapter.

My first stop on the way is probably London (thankfully I already have work authorization there), where I’ll be looking to use similar methods (as a staff reporter or freelance) while also hopefully visiting India more regularly to cultivate sources and seek out stories.

I leave deeply grateful to everyone on VI and the Times who I learnt so much about journalism from. I'm leaving to be closer to India in all ways - family, friends, the stories I want to cover, the audience I want to reach.

I also got to work on stories that came not from computational methods but from close analysis of footage, and a sense of where to look for open-source information, a skill I learnt and honed at this job. I’m linking some of my work while at this job at the end of this thread.

For example, building a dataset of photos of ships scraped from shipspotters’ Instagram accounts and then searching this dataset using reference photos of ships of interest to see if they are in it.

VI empowered me to experiment with open-source damage detection models, build pipelines to make sense of datasets containing tens of thousands of videos, and use open-source image embedding models that enable reverse-image search in large datasets.

And used it to investigate Israel’s use of 2,000-pound in an area of Gaza designated safe for civilians. For this work I shared in the Times’ 2024 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting and an OPC, Polk and NPPA award.

Used network analysis to identify members of the notorious Thug Shaker Central Discord group, and, my proudest achievement at The Times, built an object detection model for craters left by 2,000-pound bombs

And so, between then and now, among other nerdy things I’ve reverse-engineered undocumented APIs on Russian social media websites to investigate Russian soldiers, used object detection and trigonometry to report on the Chinese balloon that (likely errantly) entered US airspace,

@malachy.bsky.social, @bottid.bsky.social, Whitney Hurst, @markscheffler.bsky.social, and my terrific colleagues took a chance on me and my instinct that there was scope for deep, cutting-edge computational methods in the world of open-source investigations.

I came to VI in 2022, a computer scientist with some research and journalistic experience, but hardly daring to call myself a real life journalist.
