I do know a lot of people like 3d dressup programs or making Sims. It's a far cry from the technical demand of your own 3d-rendering, but maybe try those communities?
Otherwise try the spaces for indie gamemakers who also happened to have 3d-modeled their own main characters.

I think hanging out with people is a good start, and finding people/mutuals who do OC's even though they're not 3d, or 3d without OC's.
But if that extends specifically to wanting to talk shop with other 3d OC creators, I can see how that's niche.
