Among the oldest treasures are a 1774 specimen of Orgyia antiqua, and a 1833 Apollo butterfly 🦋 from subspecies that no longer exists. More than a scientific archive, these collections are a cultural heritage—an irreplaceable window into the past, inspiring research 🧑🔬, education 👩🏫 and wonder.

Starting in 1865 with 🧐 Count Kazimierz Wodzicki’s bird collection 🐦🦜, they now hold over 2.5 million specimens—from tiny insects 🦟 to majestic mammals 🦣. The star? 🤩 The only complete woolly rhinoceros 🦏 in the world, excavated in Starunia, astonishingly preserved for 30,000 years!

On 15.09-03.10, our 🦏 Institute hosted Adam Heteš from Comenius University, Slovakia @comeniusuni.bsky.social. Our visitor verified 4000(!) out of 7000 specimens of Jurassic crabs 🦀 from southern Poland, and most probably found a new species! The study is to be continued, stay tuned!
