My friend and colleague Wesley Morris and I had a very sobering conversation about America since the 1619 Project published and how it feels to be falling back under the veil that W.E.B. Du Bois so mournfully wrote about. I hope you’ll listen to this episode of Cannonball @nytimes.com

Noem’s cruelty is possible because it draws from racism long embedded in US history. Structural racism—framed as “patriotism” and “order”—makes such policies acceptable and normalized. She isn’t the originator but part of a long legacy of racial state violence in America.

Ryan Coogler’s #Sinners is a thrilling ride—a blood-soaked, blues-inflected fever dream. Equal parts Mississippi Gothic, coming-of-age parable, musical and vampire #horror. Although the script is unbalanced it's electrifying watching a genius filmmaker create a new genre--the vampire blues.

One of the most powerful documentaries on Netflix is The Guardian of the Monarchs. The film follows environmentalist Homero Gómez, who dedicated his life to protecting the monarch butterflies. It’s a stunning portrait of a father passing his wisdom to his son—in spite of the risk to his life.

During WWII, Mexican American youth especially those wearing zoot suits—were framed as internal threats to public order. Military personnel, police, and media collaborated to portray Chicano youth as criminals. Operation Wetback (1954) were framed as national security responses. Sound familiar?

#NoOtherLand is not just a film it’s a reckoning. It tears away the filters, the silence, the normalization of ethnic cleansing. Going forward it’s hard to imagine how #film can truly even matter—unless it stands in protest to genocide.
